Just before school started this year Max started requesting to "go on streets that I've never been on". It quickly became a favorite activity, and a general expectation when we started to journey somewhere. This is usually fine, but when we have a time constraint or, gulp, when we've already been on all the streets in the area... it gets a bit tricky.
We wondered for a while what the reason for his preference was, and eventually realized it wasn't that he wanted to look at architecture, new sights or surroundings. No, he likes reading the street signs. And he remembers the streets. He'll tell me where a "new" street will go, I guess from having read the signs when passing on a cross street before.
The hard part comes when he asks to go on a specific street, and I have no idea where it might be found.
This morning I tried to put a different spin on our little routine, by "talking to" the streets we had never been on. The boys thought this was HILARIOUS. "Oakmont, what are you doing there?", "San Gabriel, what are you doing? You are here and don't go through to the other side of 29th, but then you show up a little while later! You are confusing me so!".
Max laughs heartily and Nick just repeats the animated inflection in my voice. My boys are so much fun :)
So if you see us driving aimlessly around town, laughing and talking amongst ourselves, you can be sure we are driving on and talking to "streets we've never been on"!
