The day started with the sound of freezing rain pattering on the windows, and in central Texas that is not a common occurrence! The rain turned to snow just after Alex left for work, and it just kept coming down - big flakes, too! Our friends from the NE and Midwest would have laughed at us and our carrying on about this relatively minor snowfall, but to us it was a weather event that warranted the teachers of the elementary school down the street (and all over town) to break from their routines and let their students frolic in the rare meteorological treat.
That afternoon we had a field trip through MOMS Club to the local fire station. I had been telling and reminding Max about it all day but when the time came to leave, his toddler colors shown brightly. "NOOOO!". I was shocked but knew he would love it when we got there, so I bribed him with my iPhone for the car ride and we were off.
Max's Aunt Becca sent us a set of DVDs about a year ago called Mighty Machines. It was (is?) a Canadian television show in which nothing but trucks, buses, trains, planes, boats - machines, you get the idea - are shown doing their thing while different voices supposedly narrate their activities. He is absolutely enthralled with it, and apparently learning from it as well. While all the other kids were exploring the wheels and inside parts of the fire truck, Max went over to the area where the hose nozzles are stored and started exploring those in a more knowing way.
Here he explored the fireman's jackets, firetruck itself, hose nozzles, adjacent ambulance (which was summoned for a call, so we scrambled to get all the kiddos out and moved away so it could leave), the fuseball table and finally the highlight... the riding lawn mower(?!?)
